“I’M HERE,” Jude repeated. “I’m here now.”

Seth thought he was dreaming, hearing Jude’s voice again. He felt the steady pressure of the hand over his forehead, and Jude’s voice remained in the air.

“I’m here, baby. I’m sorry.”

He never wanted to wake up.

After some prompting, Seth opened his eyes and confirmed his fear that he wasn’t dreaming. He might be hallucinating. Jude’s calm, soothing voice and loving smile might be a mirage in the desert of mechanical beeps and alarms of his hospital room. He drifted in and out of consciousness, fighting his heavy eyelids and fuzzy mind and trying to get his vision of Jude to stay in focus.

Jude kept repeating his reassurances and touching. In time, Seth battled out of his drug-induced slumber. A few seconds of genuine eye contact finally convinced Seth of Jude’s presence. The haze lifted, and emotions and regrets flowed freely between them. Seth gasped.

“I’m sorry. Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” he kept repeating when he realized what he had done and what he had said. “I just wanted to go home and sleep. I just wanted to sleep.”

“I know. Shh, shh.” Jude stroked his hand over Seth’s face and forehead. “Don’t worry. I got you. I’m here. Just sleep it off. You’re going to be fine.”

Seth pulled Jude toward him, forcing him to lower the railing on the bed and lie next to him to satisfy Seth’s demand for closeness.

“Don’t leave me,” Seth begged. “Please don’t leave me.”

“Never,” Jude whispered sweetly, clinging to him. “I’m right here.”

Seth finally settled down with his back against Jude’s chest. The reassuring caresses over his hip lulled him back to sleep.
